We just returned home from a lovey day spent in San Juan Bautista. It was my first visit, and Calvin’s first ever trip beyond county lines! San Juan is only a 40 minute drive from our house, but it feels much further, both distance-wise and temporally.
We went to celebrate the birthday of our dear friend Jimmy, who holds an annual softball game in recognition of his special day, but the afternoon held many other adventures….
The streets of San Juan are filled with chickens that run wild and free
There are many neat antique
and Mexican art/Dia de los Muertos stores
As well as a school that employs the most unfortunately named teachers

Ivy also wanted to capture the radness of San Juan
A town whose mission features prominently in Vertigo, one of my favorite films

The mission is tranquil and gorgeous
(For a night time look at the mission, read about Larson’s first trip to San Juan)
Cactus graffiti
Calvin was a trooper and slept most of the time
Sadly, this meant he didn’t get to take in his father’s pitching skils
Then it was back to Casa Candelaria for great food and wonderful people
Happy birthday Little Baby Jimmy!

Thanks for getting us to San Juan!

Dang, those real hats looked amazing! did they have more of them inside?
