48 Hour Party People (aka Let's Start a Band!)

I’m really starting to wish I was a singer/songwriter or in a band so that I could combine all of the boring bits of my life into amusing little ditties*. We wouldn’t have to be famous, just entertaining. Anyone in? Here is a little sample of what we’ve got to work with.

In the last two days I have:
-lost my wallet
-heard a young man performing a snazzy acoustic version of “Umbrella”
-heard a (self proclaimed) “40 year old man” drop an f-bomb at the DMV
-done all of the laundry, including the bag the holds the laundry
-been to the post office twice (same day, different branches)
-made a frittata
-made a beet salad
-made chicken tortilla soup
-learned what, exactly, a “wizard staff” is (in the world of creative drinking)
-started to pack for vacation

Also, I would be open to writing/singing about the boring bits of your life. I’ve got a pretty positive attitude, but I don’t play any sort of musical instrument. Unless you count tambourine, which I assume I could play.

*See: The Streets-Blinded By the Lights (song about waiting to meet some friends at a club), Jens Lekman-Friday Night at the Drive-In Bingo (song about what the title says), Bloc Party- Sunday (song about being hung over, but still totally in love), Blur-Parklife (song about how a guy goes about his week), etc.

  1. All geat songs. I play the toy drum pretty well, just ask Larson (or better yet, Ian).

  2. I know, there’s something really satisfying about listening to music that’s just about every day life.

You’re totally in, btw. Toy drum and tambourine band…. like the White Stripes, but with less melody.

  3. I left my cell phone in a rental car, burned the shit out of a lasagna two weeks ago, and don’t even get me started on my husband’s CD habit. I’m all over the lyrics. Oh, and not to toot my own horn, but I play chamber music like a champ on the piano (easily translated to the electric keyboard). Did you ever see that Falco video of Rock Me Amadeus? I’m all over it. Also a fan of Der Kommissar, but that’s a bit more abstract (we might have to work our fan base into that one).

  4. Holy crap, you’re so in. With all that’s going on in your life, I think we should be a glam rock band. And wear similar outfits.

  5. Totally. Luckily, the sewing machine will fit in our crate. I’ll start shopping for some spandex and glitter.
