What exactly is a Freedom Ride? Brasilliant pondered this very question after my last post. The truth is nobody really knew what it was or exactly what we were getting into. However, everyone should go on a Freedom Ride.. here’s how ours went.. oh by the way… our bike gang/club is called The Real Unicorns

Got up at 5:15… Adjusted my front derailleur and drank a pot of coffee. I then road down Seabright and met up w/ Tex and Rain @ 6:30 and rode to Das Bunkhouse in Capitola to get Jim and Juan.
Ate banana pancakes, took a shot of whiskey and headed out..

We had some equipment failure.. Limped over to Mr. E’s Cyclery where they opened up a half an hour early and let us borrow some equipment to get back on the road.

Break time outside of aromas..
Life on the road
We made it to San Juan Bautista and straight to Jardines De San Juan for refreshments
Then to Juan’s parents house for beer
and an amazing spread of food
and some backyard chillout time

The rest of the day involved more drinking and wandering around SJB. When you’re with Juan you’re with royalty. see…
We went to a bar and played shuffle board with “The Chief”
To Teatro Campesino and saw a run through of a play
Met some chickens
Attended a private concert in a kiva which doubled as our sleeping quarters..
All the while things were kind of getting like this..
We then went searching for ghost smoke which I adamantly referred to as “wizard smoke”

We snuck into the mission, via Juans killer connections, and took a quick 2 minute tour..
then to another bar?
where we watched these dudes shred
I’m told there was a guy dancing and I cheered him on heartily..
When we made it back to the kiva I, very well documented-ly, took my shirt off and went to bed..

I heard that there was some deep talk and hugging it out while I slept.
Next morning was killer breakfast times
then time to say goodbye to tomas
and ride 30 plus miles back to the Das Bunkhouse
and from there to home…
Thanks to Juan’s family for the food, housing and fun times. Thanks to The Real Unicorns for being the most amazing bike gang around. Lastly a special thanks to Tex for helping me name my new bike…
Introducing Hester

I’m glad you agree that she IS Hester. She’s a stauchy, pragmatic, wisened old sweetheart.
