2007ish Albums

1. Sloan - Never Hear the End of It

This album may sound like an amalgamation of other, mostly older genres but it does it so convincingly with strong hooks and accessible, interesting lyrics that I find it fresh with every listen. Surprisingly, this beat out the other Canadian indie rockers (I'm looking at you New Pornographers) to be my favorite album of the year

2. The Affair - Yes Yes to You

This was my biggest surprise as I downloaded it on a whim and was really surprised that a hyped synth, dance rock band from Brooklyn was actually good. Features a great female singer who doesn't mind seeming both vulnerable and forthright about romance and sex. Wow, that was pretentious sounding. Anyway, the album is way more fun than I made it sound. The album production sounds great too, like a document of a good live performance giving off the energy needed for a bunch of punchy songs.

3. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Despite the fact that this album is a bit more one note than Gimme Fiction, I still really like it every time I listen to it. Although satellite radio has been playing "The Underdog" and "Don't Make Me a Target" so much it nearly kills songs like regular radio does. Regardless, a really solid effort that virtually lived up to expectations following a big success with the last album.

4. Patton Oswalt – Werewolves and Lollipops

I like to include a comedy album on my list and this one, luckily, was really good. Please go listen to his bit about KFC's famous bowl or as he calls it, "a failure pile in a sadness bowl."

5. Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris

I have loved all of their previous albums and though this one is not as solid all the way through it still makes my list because they are one of a few heavier sounding bands that are still really interesting.

6. Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell

This is another legacy pick. BR are probably my favorite band of all time and, since all their albums have very similar sounds and feels, I love all of them. This is one is no different.

7. The Apples in Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder

The second super long album on my list, New Magnetic Wonder actually delivers catchy, 70s power-pop most of the time. Again, another album that, despite its misses of which there are a few, makes happy to hear it.

Singles

Queens of the Stone Age – "Make it Wit Chu"

In the live intro to the song, Josh Homme says, "This is a song about fuckin'." 'Nuff said.

Rilo Kiley – "The Moneymaker"

Another great single about sex although the seamier side. Check out the video with lots of haggard porn stars. It makes me wish someone would invent a channel so we could watch music videos all the time.

DataRock – "Computer Camp Love"

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Combines dance, math rock with the call and response chorus from Grease. Their album is a bit spotty but I recommend it.

Tegan and Sara - "Back in Your Head"

Haven't heard the album but this song sticks with me for hours after I hear it. Plus, since Tatu didn't release anything, it is the best song by lesbian sisters.

Sloan – Album "Never Hear the End of It"

Virtually every song on this album is catchy and rockin' enough to be a single so I had trouble picking one. Buy it.

Okkervil River – "Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe"

I am beginning to tire of the indie rock sound but there are still some great songs and songwriting out there like this jam. The album overall was only alright however.

The Affair – "Andy"

More loveable, catchy dance rock about stalking.

Nelly Furtado f. Timbaland – "Promiscuous"

Timbaland is due one super-catchy song per year. Nelly Furtado is due to return to being a folky, ethnic ingénue.

Yo Majesty – "Kryptonite Pussy"

"Your punanny better make that money." That line is just the beginning. If you have an emusic account go download this song.

Old Stuff Rediscovered

Nirvana-In Utero

Forgot how much I liked this album partially because the Unplugged album is played so much more often. Anyway, better than I remembered.

Things I Hate Because Other People Like It

Bob Dylan
